Khin Maung Nyunt (Mogok)
1936–2020 | Myanmar
Khin Maung Nyunt (Mogok) was a Burmese painter born in the historic town of Inwa (Ava), Myanmar, in 1936. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Mandalay University in 1964 and later worked as a senior teacher in Mogok. His long association with the mountain town became an important part of his life and artistic identity, leading him to be known as K.M. Nyunt (Mogok).
Alongside his career in education, he developed a sustained practice as a painter and participated in group exhibitions in Myanmar. His paintings often draw from the landscapes and everyday life of the upland regions around Mogok, depicting village communities, markets, local occupations, festivals, musicians, traders and people at work. Among his recorded subjects are Lisu New Year celebrations, village life, flower vendors, gem miners, woodcutters, traders and the roads and forests around Mogok.
His works are predominantly paintings in oil on canvas, with some works made in oil pastel. Rather than treating the landscape simply as scenery, his paintings bring together people, place and daily experience. The life of the uplands—its communities, occupations and surroundings—became a recurring subject throughout his later work.
In 2005, Khin Maung Nyunt participated in the BEEPPU Project in Beppu, Japan, marking an important international presentation of his work. In 2018, at the age of 82, he held his first solo exhibition at Suvannabhumi Art Gallery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He continued to paint until the later years of his life.
Khin Maung Nyunt died in Mogok in 2020. His work has continued to be presented after his death, including Songs of Upland, a posthumous exhibition held at Suvannabhumi Art Gallery in Chiang Mai in 2022. His paintings remain closely connected to the people, landscapes and everyday life of Myanmar’s upland communities.
